Our body parts are able to move freely because of the joints and hence it is important to keep them safe and taken care of. The breaking or damage of bones will often result in improper physical function and development of chronic pain.
A person's peak bone mass is achieved when the person reaches their late 20's which is the prime time of a person's life. Therefore, it is essential for a person to take more calcium-rich food during this time period for a healthy and strong bone. Arthroscopic Rotator Cuff Repair
The rotator cuff is a group of tendons and muscles in the shoulder that help keep the shoulder joint in place. They also help to lift and rotate the arms. But, sometimes an injury or overtime wear and tear causes a tear in the rotator cuff that manifests severe shoulder pain. Most of the tears can be fixed by prescribing medicines and physical therapy. Only when the pain is critical, and medication and other noninvasive techniques are ineffective in correcting the tear surgery is recommended. Arthroscopic surgery is the most preferred type of procedure that is used to repair the torn rotator cuff.
CAUSES OF ROTATOR CUFF TEAR
Below are a few conditions that might cause a rotator cuff tear
TENDINITIS – This condition is mainly seen in tennis players and painters who overuse their shoulders that cause the inflammation in the joint.
BURSITIS – It is caused by the inflammation of the bursa. These are the fluid-filled sacs present in between the rotator cuff and the underlying bone.
ACUTE INJURY OR OVERUSE – Injuries that are caused by lifting heavy objects, improper position of shoulders, or strain from a fall or injury can lead to tearing in the rotator cuff.
SYMPTOMS
Not all rotator cuff injuries cause pain. Mostly degenerative injuries start to show signs only after months of injury. Common symptoms include
- Difficulty achieving full range of shoulder motion
- Progressive weakness of the shoulder
- Trouble sleeping during the night
- Trouble reaching behind the back
- Avoiding certain activities because of the pain
DIAGNOSIS
Doctors can identify the tear either by medical history, physical examination, or by imaging scans. X-rays help to identify any bone spurs while MRI is used to examine the soft tissues like muscles and tendons.
TREATMENT
Treatments include resting the affected arm to surgery based on the symptoms. Surgery is recommended only when the shoulder pain hasn’t improved after 6-12 months, Weakening of the shoulder, tear in the rotator cuff tendon, rely on the shoulder for your job or active in sports.
Arthroscopic surgery is the most common procedure that is performed to repair the torn rotator cuff and reattach the tendon to the head of the humerus. It is a daycare procedure performed under anesthesia that makes use of arthroscope inserted into the small incisions made on the skin. The arthroscope displays the torn cuff images on the screen through which the surgeon will fix the problem.
Recovery from arthroscopic surgery is faster when compared with open tendon surgery. However, complete recovery will take time and depends on how patients follow their physiotherapy exercises.
Only an experienced orthopaedic surgeon or sports medicine specialist can identify the symptoms of rotator cuff tear. Contact TOSH - Trauma and Orthopaedic Specialty Hospital, Chennai for immediate diagnosis and effective treatment of your shoulder pain.

New Solution for Knee Pain
Stem Cell Therapies is advised if you have encountered an injury to the knee meniscus, cartilage, MCL or ACL ligaments, or have chronic knee pain due to a past injury or arthritis
Stem Cell Therapies have been used in different medical conditions to restore the function and improve the quality of life. In most of the cases, stem cell therapies have been lifesaving. Bone marrow transplant is the most widely used stem-cell therapy.
Stem cell therapy promotes the reparative response of diseased, dysfunctional or injured tissue using stem cells or their derivatives. It is the advanced level of organ transplantation and makes uses of cells instead of donor organs, which are limited in supply.
Researchers culture stem cells in a laboratory. These stem cells are worked upon to specialize into specific types of cells, such as heart muscle cells, blood cells, bone marrow cells or nerve cells. The specialized cells can then be implanted into a person.
- Speed up the length of time it takes for injuries or wounds to heal
- Decrease nerve damage
- Reduce pain, even chronic joint pain, with less need for medications
- Increase functionality, range of motion, flexibility and sleep quality
- Reduce muscle compensations and risk for future injuries
- Return patients to their normal activities as quickly as possible
As with most of the medical procedure, stem cell therapy does come with minimal risks. However, advances in stem cell treatment have nullified many of the risks. The biggest risk is most patients undergoing stem cell therapy face is an infection from the extraction of adipose tissue or the injection of stem cells.
The recovery time from a stem cell therapy treatment is virtually none. A stem cell therapy treatment is an outpatient procedure. Other than some minor discomfort at the injection site for a short time after the treatment, patients can return to work the next day. This makes stem cell therapy a great treatment alternative for all those who are concerned about the long recovery time associated with a surgical procedure.
