Want Freedom from Your Back Pain ?

Herniated disc is a common medical situation among adults. In some people, herniated discs presses against the spinal cord or the nerve roots causing acute pain that is very difficult to bear. These cannot be completely treated with medication. Surgical processes are the best methods to deal with such cases. Discectomy is the surgical process that is done to remove herniated discs that presses against the spinal cord or the nerve roots.

An ortho specialist might suggest a discectomy when the patient has an acute pain on the leg or expresses weakness in the legs or complaint about numbness in the feet. Usually, the ortho specialist would wait for around a month to see if nonsurgical methods can improve the condition of the patient. The surgeon usually resorts to surgical methods only after he finds that medications have been ineffective. Loss of bowel or bladder control and possibility of losing motion of the limbs are also reasons that might force the doctor to go for a
discectomy.

The doctor makes a small incision near the herniated part. He may remove a lamina of the infected part of the vertebrae to have a clearer vision of the herniated disc. Surgeon then cut off the herniated part of the disc. Any lose fragments of bone around the area might also be removed. The whole surgical process is usually done under general anaesthesia. Usually, the patient is made to walk on the first day after surgery. The patient would feel an instant vanishing of the pain but the numbness and weakness from the leg would subside only after few days.

Trauma and Orthopaedic Speciality Hospital (TOSH) is leading hospital that deals with all Joint Problems.  Dr. Zakeer Hussain at TOSH has been one of the prominent doctors in this field since long back. Utmost medical care is what discectomy require and that is exactly what one gets at TOSH.

New Solution for Knee Pain

Stem Cell Therapies is advised if you have encountered an injury to the knee meniscus, cartilage, MCL or ACL ligaments, or have chronic knee pain due to a past injury or arthritis

Stem Cell Therapies have been used in different medical conditions to restore the function and improve the quality of life. In most of the cases, stem cell therapies have been lifesaving. Bone marrow transplant is the most widely used stem-cell therapy.

Stem cell therapy promotes the reparative response of diseased, dysfunctional or injured tissue using stem cells or their derivatives. It is the advanced level of organ transplantation and makes uses of cells instead of donor organs, which are limited in supply.

Researchers culture stem cells in a laboratory. These stem cells are worked upon to specialize into specific types of cells, such as heart muscle cells, blood cells, bone marrow cells or nerve cells. The specialized cells can then be implanted into a person.

  • Speed up the length of time it takes for injuries or wounds to heal
  • Decrease nerve damage
  • Reduce pain, even chronic joint pain, with less need for medications
  • Increase functionality, range of motion, flexibility and sleep quality
  • Reduce muscle compensations and risk for future injuries
  • Return patients to their normal activities as quickly as possible

As with most of the medical procedure, stem cell therapy does come with minimal risks. However, advances in stem cell treatment have nullified many of the risks. The biggest risk is most patients undergoing stem cell therapy face is an infection from the extraction of adipose tissue or the injection of stem cells.

The recovery time from a stem cell therapy treatment is virtually none.  A stem cell therapy treatment is an outpatient procedure. Other than some minor discomfort at the injection site for a short time after the treatment, patients can return to work the next day. This makes stem cell therapy a great treatment alternative for all those who are concerned about the long recovery time associated with a surgical procedure.

Knee Replacement - Back to Normal Life Again

The knee is an important joint and it bears the total weight of the body. It is the most common joint that gets worn out when people become aged. Hemophilia, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and patients with gout may also need a knee replacement surgery as these diseases severely affect the joints.

It is necessary to go in for Knee Replacement Surgery when the knee joints are totally damaged. Generally, prosthesis is used as an alternate for the knee joint, depending on the cost involved and the patient’s condition. The life of the replaced knee will be about twenty years whereas the life of the artificial knee depends totally on the patient’s activity.
http://toshhospitals.com/joint-replacement/knee-replacement/

There are two Types of Knee Replacement such as Partial Knee Replacement (Unicondylar) and Total Knee Replacement.

Partial Knee Replacement (Unicondylar): The worn out knee part is replaced. There are three compartments for a knee. Medial compartment (inside of the knee), lateral compartment (outer part of the knee) and patellofemoral compartment (front portion of the knee between the thighbone and kneecap). Even when any single compartment is worn out, this surgery is performed.

Total Knee Replacement: This joint arthroplasty is performed when all the compartments of the knee are totally affected. It is the most commonly done surgery that yields good results.

Patients who suffer from the above conditions are ideal for joint arthroplasty. A complete pre-operative evaluation will be done before the surgery especially for heart, hypertension, lung and UTI infection, and people with diabetes.

Implant selection

Numerous implants such as titanium alloys, zirconium alloys, oxonium implants, cobalt chromium alloys, and stainless steel are available for knee joint replacement surgeries. Such prosthetics are available in different designs with easier rotation to increase knee bending. Implant selection depends on the patient’s knee condition and the monetary status.

The stages involved in the knee replacement surgery are pre-operative, intraoperative, postoperative, and home care. Generally, the patients will be discharged within 7-10 days of the procedure.

The pre-operative session involves conducting thorough investigations such as blood tests, X-Ray, ECG, Echo, and Gynecological, cardiological and aesthetical interactions. Patient counseling will also be done.

Intra-operative Session: Patients will be taken to the operation stomach in an empty stomach. The surgery will last for two hours. Either epidural or general anesthesia is given to the patient based on their health conditions and the region below the waist is numbed. Quadriceps muscles are detached from the knee cap. The leg and thigh bones will be exposed by displacing the kneecap to one side. The ends of the bones are cut and the necessary cartilages and ligaments are removed. With a cementing material, the prosthesis is wedged on the bone. The stitches are made on the open wound.

Post-operative Session: The patient is provided with a knee brace and is advised to intake normal food along with the medicines prescribed by the surgeon. The blood is drained and the wound is dressed. Physiotherapy and knee bending exercises are taught to the patient. Once the patient starts to mobilize, they will be discharged.

Home Care: Caring for the wound is quite important. Physiotherapy will be given to the patient for 10 days, at home. The dressing should not be disturbed and should remain water-free. After 5 days dressing will be done and sutures will be removed after 10-12 days.
