Different Types Of Hand Disorders

Hands are a unique part of the human body that symbolizes strength, power, and protection. According to Aristotle, the hands are the “Tool of Tools.” They are one of the greatest assets that can grasp, move, and manipulate objects. It has been estimated that almost 20% of all disabling accidents on the job involve the hands. Any hand injury can hamper basic hand movements and significantly affect the quality of life.

TYPES OF HAND DISORDERS

1.CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME

It is a common condition that occurs when one of the primary nerves to the hand, known as the median nerve is squeed or compressed. It causes a feeling of numbness, tingling, and weakness in the hands. This condition is common in people who perform repetitive work using wrist and hand like typing. Doctors can suggest Steroid injections, Oral anti-inflammatory drugs, braces or splints as part of the nonsurgical treatment procedure. Surgery might be required if none of the nonsurgical procedures are effective in treating the condition.

2.DUPUYTREN’S CONTRACTURE

It is a common hereditary disorder that causes an abnormal thickening of the tissue between the skin and the tendons in the palm. The initial symptom of the condition is the occurrence of a small lump or nodule in the palm. As the disease progress, the nodule might become painless and cause the curling of the fingers. Treatment will be most effective when sought only at an early stage.non surgical options like collagenase and corticosteroid injections are used to treat the condition.

3.ARTHRITIS

It is a condition characterized by the inflammation of the tissues that surrounds the joint. The two types of arthritis that affect the hands are Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis. The former is caused due to the natural aging process whereas the later due to the immune system dysfunction. Both the conditions attack and wear away the protective cartilage lining between the bones in the hand and wrist. The noticeable symptoms include swelling, pain, or burning in the joints, lack of strength, and difficulty moving the wrist. The advanced treatments available to treat the condition are arthroscopic and minimally invasive techniques.

Ganglion cyst is the most common hand tumor that grows either on the top or inner side of your wrist. Most hand tumors are not considered cancerous. The early indicator of the cysts is the appearance of the lump that might cause discomfort and pain. Aspiration is the most common treatment method used to treat cysts.
